What is the Mini Gastric Bypass Procedure?
Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery is a type of Bariatric Surgery that is performed in Mexico. The Mini Gastric Bypass MBG procedure is recommended for patients who need to lose between 100 to 150 pounds. This surgery is quicker, technically easier and carries a lower complication rate compared to that of the full Gastric Bypass Surgery.
In the Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery, the surgeon divides the stomach with a laparoscopic stapler starting near the gastric fundus where the hunger hormone is created. Most of the stomach is no longer attached to the remaining stomach and will no longer receive food making the capacity much smaller. Some doctors like Dr. Hidalgo in Puerto Vallarta even create a pouch similar to the gastric sleeve so that the ghrelin and the hunger hormone are completely removed from the body. The new stomach now has a reduced capacity of about 75%. The surgeon then attaches the small intestine to the new stomach measuring out about 6 feet of the small intestines to bypass the upper portion of the small intestines and to allow the digestive juices produced by the stomach to meet up with food further down in the intestines.
Mini Gastric Bypass procedure reduces the size of the stomach and reroutes the intestines, that means, it serves 2 functions: it limits the amount of food you can eat by reducing the size of the stomach with the new pouch (restrictive) and by bypassing up to 6 feet of intestines it prevents the body from absorbing as many calories because the intestines that absorb the calories are shortened (malabsorptive)
As a result, patients after having Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery, will feel fuller sooner while eating, absorb fewer calories and fat, lose up to 80% of their excess weight within one to two years after surgery and have significant health improvement. Patients usually lose weight very quickly, and they tend to keep the weight off over the long term. The goal for a mini gastric patient is to lose their 150 pounds or less within the first year post surgery if possible.
Mini Gastric Bypass reduces operating time on average by 50 minutes and simplifies the procedure reducing complications compared to the normal RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery. However, the mini gastric bypass may cause severe acid-reflux because the pouch is small and connected to the intestines. It is possible for gastric juices to travel down the intestines and into the new pouch causing reflux, something that does not happen with the RNY gastric bypass.
Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery as any other bariatric surgery will not work over the long term if you slip back into old habits. It is a successful weight loss tool especially if you use it right and change your habits and lifestyle. You have to be committed to a new lifestyle which includes a limited healthy diet and exercise routine to keep maintaining your weight-loss journey.
